Lockpicking must be divided into two categories which are commonly confused. The first category is picking and the second is raking. Either of these techniques is intended to be a method of convenience for opening locks. Method of making keys by impressioning is also very desirable.

In order to understand how to compromise a lock there are certain steps which are essential to laying a proper foundation. They are: A through working knowledge of the lock mechanism, how it functions, and the ability to recognize these factors so that you are able to overcome them.

Tool design is a direct result of the function it will be required to perform and falls into one of the three major categories: Hook tool, Diamond Pick, Rake. Other individual styles of picks are usually just a modification of one of these groups.
