The pin tumbler lock is the most widely used lock. It offers medium to high security and is found in doors, cars, and a host of other applications.

The principle of the pin tumbler is a series of tumblers resembling small pins (usually 5) held in place by other pins resting on top of them, called drivers, which are in turn, held in place by springs.

Locks that use regular, smooth pins are the easiest to pick, and are the best to learn with.

Picking locks requires two intrinsic items: A pick and a tension tool.

A good range of pick thicknesses is from .025-.035”; too thin will slip the pins out of alignment, and too think will bind in the keyway. The most useful pick is probably the curved variety, although straight picks have their uses…

Once you have mastered the art of picking you are ready for bigger and better things. Raking method is especially nice if you’re in a hurry.

It’s quite simple to pick open a file cabinet. Most file cabinets nowadays have a cheap disk tumbling system. If the disk patterns match the key shape, presto! It’s open.

The technique shown here for opening locked door is the most basic. For this it has to be a door with a gap as wide as a width of a butter knife.

You are going to learn most the simple ways to pick file cabinet locks and open locked doors by reading this file.

MIT Guide to Lock Picking details the knowledge and skills that are essential for lock picking, but more importantly it provides you with models and exercises that will help you study locks on your own. With this guidebook in hand one can learn to recognize and exploit the defects in a lock.

The big secret of lock picking is that it’s easy. Anyone can learn how to pick locks. The theory of lock picking is the theory of exploiting mechanical defects.

Knowing how a lock works when it is opened by a key is only part of what you need to know. You also need to know how a lock responds to picking. From this manual you will learn the models which will help you understand a lock’s response to picking.

The key is inserted into the keyway of the plug. The protrusions on the side of the keyway are called wards. Wards restrict the set of keys that can be inserted into the plug. The plug is a cylinder which can rotate when the proper key is fully inserted.

In order to become good at picking locks, you will need a detailed understanding of how locks works and what happens as it is picked. This document uses two models to help you understand the behavior of locks. You will learn about a model that highlights interactions between pin positions. Workings of picking and complicated mechanical defects will also be explained here.

The procedure for one pin at a time picking a lock is to apply a sheer force, and the pin which is binding the most, and push it up. When the top of the key pin reaches the sheer line, the moving portion of the lock will give slightly, and driver pin will be trapped above the sheer line. This is called setting a pin.

MIT Guide to Lock Picking presents us with basic concepts and definition with detailed understanding of how locks works and what happens as it is picked with a lot of other pertinent information.

All of the ProSeries® locks have a generic construction technology that allows for a uniform assembly and disassembly technique.

Two functions are available in the locks, NKR (Non Key Retaining) and NRK (Non Removable Key) and both functions are accomplished as a design feature of the extension.

Master Lock Company makes seven basic cylinder sizes/types for use in our padlocks. All locks are supplied with a six pin length cylinder for uniform keying capability. The cylinder may be combinated with 4, 5, or 6 pins to accommodate existing key codes.

Master Lock keys are coded from bow to tip and with a few exceptions, the increment used is .0155″. Master Lock keys will be encountered with two types of stamping on them. Both direct and blind codes are stamped on the keys for different products.

All the locks use an extension mechanism that causes the ball bearings to lock or unlock the shackle. Typically, these locks are supplied with a non key retaining function extension.

Master Lock ProSeries Padlock Technical Manual has well illustrated text with more than 3 pages of lock terminology.

Following matter is covered in this technical manual:

It covers different types of locks and picks, how to obtain the picks that you need and finally how to pick locks. Believe it or not, you will probably be able to pick some locks within 15 minutes of reading this file, without picks… what more can one want??

There are several types of locks. Some of the more common are: The Pin Tumbler, The Cylindrical Lock (aka Tubular lock), The Wafer Tumbler, Skeleton Key Locks, Rinky-Dink Locks etc.

There are “MASTER KEYS” available for certain types of locks, but these are harder to get and they aren’t even real picks. Sufice to say they do the job if you can get them. Otherwise there are three general clasifications of “lock picks.”

The Tension wrench is not a pick, but you need one. It’s “L” shaped and used with all picks. You usually get one with a set of picks. This is used to put pressure on the tumblers in a lock when you are using a pick. Therefor, once you “solve” a specific tumbler, it will stay in place while you move on to the next tumbler.

A concise but useful compilation of information is provided in this file. Believe it or not, you will probably be able to pick some locks within 15 minutes of reading this file, without picks…

Kwikset Rekeying Manual comprises of information relating to working of Kwikset locks, tools for rekeying, rekeying knobs and levers, masterkeying and more!! An excellent guide for anyone interested in this subject.

Kwikset locks operate by matching the cuts on the keys with the bottom pin tumblers inside the cylinder plug.

There are two sets of five pins in each lock, top and bottom, and a set of springs. The top pins are all the same size and are flat on both ends

Inside a Kwikset/Society Brass Collection Rekeying Kit are the different bottom pin sizes you need to rekey a lock, a Key Gauge for reading the cuts on a key, a Cylinder Removing Tool (affectionately known as a “pick¬le fork”), and a plug follower. This is a very simple device which keeps lock parts from scattering across the room when you remove the plug (which houses the pins, and into which the key fits) from the cylinder.

Before you can rekey a lock, you have to know what pins to use. For obvious security reasons, Kwikset doesn’t print key-cut combinations on the packaging. We use this Key Gauge to find the key-cut combi¬nations. Before disassembling the lock, measure the cuts and write down the numbers. There are also extra top pins, springs and other parts in the kit.
